In June 2019, the coordinators of the project started the preparation for the recrutiment process. They prepared necessary documents (terms and conditions of the recruitment, application form) and together with the English language teacher and School Principal, they chose 11 students who met the recruitment criterias.
Before the mobility, our school signed the letter of intent with the partner school in Poland and agreed on the program of the internship with the partner hotels in Poland.
Our project coordinators took care of the vocational, linguistic and cultural preparation of the participants of the project. Students received the materials about Polish history and culture, and learned some basic Polish vocabulary with the focus on the vocational vocabulary. Students also participted in the additonal lessons in the hospitality&catering subject, as well as in the health&safety subject.
11 students from the Hospitality & Catering department of our school had the opportunity to develop their professional skills in prestigious Accor hotels (Mercure Kraków Stare Miasto, Novotel Centre, Ibis Centre and Novotel City West) in Cracow, Poland.
Our students obtained knowledge and skills from specialists in the hospitality and catering sector. Seven of them worked as cooks and four of them worked as waiters.
The participants of the project visited our Polish partner school - Zespół Szkół Ponadpodstawowych w Giebułtowie; they had the opportunity to meet with Polish students and experience the classroom atmosphere in the partner school. During this visit, our students learnt about Polish culture, participated in a quiz about Polish history and culture and even...played football with students from the partner school.
During weekends, students participated in the trips to beautiful Zakopane with spectacular Tatra Mountains and to Auschwitz - the largest of the German Nazi concentration camps and extermination centers, where over 1.1 million men, women and children lost their lives during the II World War.
During weekdays, after work, the participants visited many museums and sites of historical interest in Cracow, such as the Underground Museum which exhibits real underground archaeological layers from the Medieval Main Square, and it presents connections between the Middle Age Cracow and other Middle Age European cities; other visits included those to Wawel castle, Wawel Dragon and Lego Museum.
In terms of acquiring professional skills, in accordance with the set objectives, the former learnt To prepare vegetable, meat, fish and pasta dishes, To organise and manage the kitchen service, To manage stock and To prepare dessert and patisserie products, while the latter learnt To manage the environment and the integrity of the raw materials in a restaurant, To manage the bar and the restaurant dining room in a restaurant, and To manage the restaurant service. Furthermore, they all participated in a training course on safety issues at the workplace, which occurred on their first day at these hotels (all members of AccorHotels). Working in such big enterprises, apart from acquiring professional skills, helped our students to improve their teamwork and linguistic skills and become more open to communicate in a new multicultural environment. During their stay, they also participated in 3 cultural days, namely visiting our partner school “W. Witos Upper-Secondary School Complex in Giebułtów”, Auschwitz and Zakopane. Our partner school organized a 3-hour welcome program for our students including (i) a traditional music program, (ii) a quiz presentation about the history of Poland, during which our students and several students of the partner school were mixed together, formed groups and collaborated in order to find the correct answer to each question, (iii) a guide in the classrooms while different lessons were taking place, and (iv) sport games in which our students played with the local students. All this interaction with the local students filled our students with enthusiasm, made them more open to other cultures and opened their minds that they could have good options not only in terms of a European career development but also in terms of living in such a beautiful country. Further to this, our trip to Auschwitz was very didactic, not only to our students but also to the accompanying teachers as they all learnt about the holocaust by having a first-hand experience of the place, the belongings of the victims and the history of this tragedy. Moreover, our trip to Zakopane gave entertainment and edutainment to our students as they experienced and enjoyed the nature and the mountains of Poland, they played games together and they experienced traditional food and other products in the picturesque center of Zakopane. In addition to the above, our students with their accompanying teachers visited a number of museums such as Rynek Underground where they had the opportunity to see remains of medieval constructions and learn about the medieval Krakow.
By the end of this mobility flow, each of our students received their Europass Mobility document stating their acquired skills and competences; they all performed very well during their everyday tasks, and proof of this are the very good comments and evaluations in their logbooks, which they received from their supervisors at their workplaces, together with the great willingness of the latter to host again new interns from our school. A few of our students were shy, especially at the beginning, to communicate in English; however, through the time, they became more comfortable and improved their communication and linguistic skills.
After the mobility flow, the learners prepared presentations about the training in Poland delivering their experiences and learning outcomes, and the accompanying teachers prepared a trip report. The former also completed the Erasmus+ questionnaire in which they evaluated the impact of the project on their professional, linguistic and personal competences.
