Four teachers -of Maths, Literature, History and Physics- and the Principal of our Lyceum had the opportunity to participate in the course "Google for Education", which took place in Krakow, Poland, between 19.07.2021 and 27.07.2021. During this 8-day course the teachers developed their ICT competences; they have learnt how to use tools built for teaching and learning, currently known as Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals (formerly known as G Suite for Education). Among the tools of Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals, the major tool built for schools is Google Classroom, and this was the core of this course. Our educators gained practical knowledge and useful tips regarding the implementation of this knowledge into their field of expertise.
The course took place at the venue of our partner organization - Polish Teacher's Union, in a historical building in Krakow, at Karmelicka street. Our teachers also had the opportunity to meet course participants and educators from other countries.
The teachers participated also in the cultural program, which included the trips to beautiful Zakopane and to Auschwitz - the largest of the German Nazi concentration camps and extermination centers, where over 1.1 million men, women and children lost their lives during the II World War.
During their stay they have gained knowledge about Polish culture, traditions and history. In Zakopane, they have tried the traditional mountain style Polish cheese - oscypek, and reached the Gubalowka top with a cabin railway. After the sessions, they visited many museums and sites of historical interest in Krakow, such as the Wawel castle and the Underground Museum which exhibits real underground archaeological layers from the Medieval Main Square, and it presents connections between the Middle Age Cracow and other Middle Age European cities.
The course participants learnt to:
integrate technology in the classroom
create and manage a paperless class
build better class communication, communicate with their classroom community online and save time
create a web site for their class
organize activities for themselves and others, keep track of their class schedules and appointments
bring meetings online
manage their class and assignments with Google Classroom
measure growth of students
build interactive lessons for their students
facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
Moreover, they:
have developed creativity and computer skills
have enhanced communication skills useful for acting in the international environment
exchanged experiences and knowledge with people from different countries.
The course was project-based, and so the participants worked individually and as a team on projects and scenarios related to their specialty. One of the main projects involved the development of a sample Web site of each teacher's course, including information and material such as (i) Course name and Teacher’s name as the page title; (ii) A text box describing the purpose of the class site; (iii) Student sections of Roster, Grades, Projects, Syllabus; (iv) Collaborators; (v) Good navigation, subpages, layouts, etc.; (vi) Restricted access to specific people; (vii) Specific linked material related to each teacher’s specialization. Use of educational sources such as Khan Academy; (viii) Links to the Google Classroom of the course, specific assignments, etc.
Finally, the participants -four teachers, in Maths, Literature, History and Physics, and the school principal- developed updated teaching/school management plans involving the use of the educational tools and methods they learnt. Samples of these plans can be downloaded here.
The teachers have prepared a presentation of what they learnt, with practical small tutorials, so that their colleagues are benefitted from it. To access the presentation, please request access by sending us an e-mail including your full name, organization, capacity and the purpose of use of the presentation content.
